Shuttle XPC SB52G2
Marca: Buono This is a 2004 model, for Intel P4 Socket 478 cpu, based on Intel 845 / ICH4.
This was marketed as a quiet, compact server box. It was noteworthy at the
time as their only model offering 2 available PCI slots, plus dual NICs
(a 10/100 and a Gigabit). It provides 2 IDE controllers. You can have
up to 2G of RAM, though I only have 1G installed. Like all Shuttle XPCs,
you assemble it from a kit (adding cpu, hdd, RAM, & optical drive that
you purchase on your own), but there are good step-by-step instructions,
and the whole process is pretty accessible to the novice.
I've run eCS 1.1, 1.2, 1.2R, and -- briefly, just for testing -- a couple
of the 2.0 betas or release candidates on it. The chipsets built into the
small form factor mainboard (audio, video, both NICs) are all satisfactorily
operable by drivers that are supplied as standard with eCS. That said, only
two of the eCS installs mentioned above could be fully accomplished without
expert assistance and intervention.
PEER install normally fails, with various errors. This means that components
from that point on in the eCS install never go on. TCP/IP for internet _may_
have to be done manually (or at least tinkered with) in a separate pass. It
seems to me that the dual-NICs fatally confuse the eCS installer, as it
presently exists. (I filed a Bug Ticket on this with Serenity, quite some
time ago, but nothing ever came of it. It is significant though, as dual-NIC
hardware has become much less exotic in recent years.)
Even with everything properly installed, only one NIC will be active at a
time, without reconfiguring eCS; the other one is "not found" at boot-up.
Under Windows, they are "hot-swappable" at will.
All things considered, this double-shoebox-size computer has been quite
a good performer. Not much from its full-size counterparts is really missed.
