Cameraderie v. 1.5 is almost certainly the way to go. It worked for me and my Canon 400D after all attempts at "normal" USB contact with the camera failed. I do sometimes have to reboot with the camera connected to the PC to get Cameraderie to see the device, but other than that the program has been problem-free.
